Pure Bathing Culture’s Video “Pray for Rain”

Pure Bathing Culture - Pray for Rain Video

Pure Bathing Culture has shared the video for their new single, “Pray for Rain,” today. The clip, directed by Greg Hardes and Jacob Proud for Maverick.NYC, is a meditation on the nature of identity and the duality contained within. The video’s surprisingly dark themes reveal a twist approximately halfway through that complicates the narrative thread.

Director Greg Hardes said, “We wanted to explore the idea of someone reaching for a sense of identity in a world they can’t quite relate to. The lyrics, ‘Are you cut in two, cut all the way through?’, gave birth to the concept of Joe as a character and his unconventional relationship with both Jenna and himself.”

Sarah Versprille & Daniel Hindman shared, “The video is about someone going wherever they need to go in order to get where they’re going and sometimes this is about excess; you have be who you are and sometimes you need to chase the darkness. We’re all related, it’s all about our interactions. And we’re doing this with each other all the time. Sometimes for better and sometimes for worse. Really, how can you not be cut in two if you really, honestly look inside yourself?”

Pray For Rain is the band’s second studio album and first with producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Swans, Angel Olsen, The Walkmen) at the helm. It is a big step for the band which one can hear from the opening notes of their anthemic title track. Pray for Rain is the sound of the group confidently taking a step up to the next level and finding their footing as a band.

Versprille summarizes the Pray for Rain experience as one of “stepping into the realm of discovering who we are as a band and as songwriters,” echoing a theme of the album itself, the process of change and transition. “You can find the best version of yourself in those hardest moments,” she said. Pray for Rain is the sound of Pure Bathing Culture transforming from who they were to who they will be, of finding their way, ready to take steps both small and momentous on their musical path.

The band performed at MusicfestNW last weekend on the main stage in a lineup alongside Modest Mouse, The Tallest Man on Earth, Danny Brown and others. Pure Bathing Culture will also hit the road on a North American tour starting mid-September. The band kicks off their headline dates in Seattle and will hit major markets across the U.S. and Canada including New York City, Philadelphia, Toronto, Montreal, Washington DC, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. They will be joined by indie pop act & fellow Portland residents, Wild Ones. A full list of dates is available below.
