Protomartyr hails from Detroit, a city that’s unique in the American experience. On one hand, it’s a parable of US post-industrial frailty. It’s also an oddity that infatuates outsiders, an opportunity to start over on multiple levels, from cheap property, to the promise of artistic freedoms. Terms like “urban renewal” start getting floated around, and outsiders begin to plan for the future. However, to locals like Protomartyr, these experiences are uninvited. The new song off their upcoming full-length Under Colour of Official Right (out 4/8 on Hardly Art) is “Come & See.” The song proffers its own sardonic allegory, presented as an apocalyptic vision of journalists, oligarchs, neo-entrepreneurs, artists, talking heads, politicians, bankers, tech firms, and other outsiders trying to “better” a city. It’s the palpable feeling of not being invited to the future.

Protomartyr will be touring in support of their new record, as well as playing an absurd number of shows at SXSW.
