Fresh off of the release of their sophomore LP Velveteen, PONY has teamed up with Hattiesburg, Mississippi synth punk icons MSPAINT for a remix of their track “Haunted House.”

While the original rendition of “Haunted House” rests on heavy, distorted guitars and Sam Bielanski’s ethereal vocal, the MSPAINT remix injects the song with new energy. Blown out breakbeats, fuzz bass and walls of synth lift the song to another level while Sam’s vocal is pitch shifted, distorted and often sampled to become a new instrument in its own right.

The seeds of this collaboration were planted after the bands met on tour supporting Militarie Gun last fall and while this pairing might not be the one that you expect, it packs a punch.

“After touring together we knew we had to do something with them. We sent our new record Velveteen to Nick from MSPAINT and asked if any of the songs spoke to him. He chose ‘Haunted House,’ which always felt like a bit of an outlier on the record and their remix gave the song a whole new life for us! Nick is also the only person so far to correctly guess what TV show inspired the song.” Bielanski explains.

Speaking on the track Nick of MSPAINT says “As soon as I heard ‘Haunted House,’ I was taken back to watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer or American Horror Story (season 1 obviously). I knew I wanted to do something that sounded like a zombified version of Chibo Matto or Sneaker Pimps. Quinn helped me with a lot of the details. For instance, using the clip of Sam’s gasp to punctuate the hits was his idea. We’re so thankful PONY let us take their song to the lab.”

Velveteen, the sophomore LP from Toronto power-pop champions PONY examines the complex relationships between longing, connection, and authenticity to oneself. The albums 10 tracks blend a hyper catchy mix of freewheeling 90s college rock and early 2000s alternative that lets the bands anthemic pomp and unguarded vulnerability shine as a formula that feels as effortless as it does fresh.
