Tapeworms are back with new track “Pitch Pop,” the song arrives ahead of their forthcoming album Grand Voyage out April 11 via New York City’s Music Website and Japan’s P-Vine. Conceived as an exercise in crafting a pop song, the track draws from early electroclash, French touch-style compressed beats, and the glamorous sounds of Japanese producer Yasutaka Nakata (Capsule, Perfume). Their initial pursuit of a perfectly calibrated pop song was then deliberately subverted by the inclusion of raw, imperfect guitar and vocal takes, adding a layer of spontaneity to its polished sheen. The result is an anthemic yet delicate balance between shoegaze and electrohouse, filled with lush synths and punchy production.

“Leaning toward the melancholic, the lyrics explore the theme of friendship,” the band explains, highlighting the contrast between the song’s introspective meaning and its upbeat, euphoric sound. “The result is a contrasted work, an intimate speech about the complexity of authentic feelings, and the projection of our own bias within our relations. ‘Pitch Pop’ also conveys a personal idea of the urban feeling and getting into the rhythm of a big city, while highlighting the myriad of individualities that compose it. In that sense, it stays in line with the general atmosphere of the album, starting the song on a missed long distance call.”

Grand Voyage tells the journey of someone caught between dream and reality. Playing around with narration and sound environments, the songs explore ideas and concepts that anyone can relate too, like dealing with sentimental bonds, alienation and dehumanization of the work environment, longing for new and desirable places, and the challenge of overcoming emotional dead ends. Above all, Grand Voyage is an invitation to step beyond hesitation, to transform the dreams in your mind into tangible reality, and to celebrate the in-between—between places, memories, and the person we were and the person we’re becoming.
