Paul Banks Covers Iggy Pop for Sister Midnight Film

Paul Banks (Interpol) has released a pair of double A-side singles, taken from the official soundtrack of the film Sister Midnight (dir. Karan Kandhari). Banks puts his own spin on two Iggy Pop tracks “Sister Midnight” and “Gimme Danger” – both originally co-written with David Bowie and The Stooges, respectively. His interpretations capture the raw intensity and brooding allure of the originals while infusing them with his own moody style.
Paul Banks on “Sister Midnight” and “Gimme Danger:”
“Gimme Danger” is one of my favorite Stooges songs, and ‘Sister Midnight’ I was less familiar with, but it is the titular track of a film that is feral with Stoogian grit and joy, so I was equally excited to immerse myself in it, and find an interpretation that felt authentic to my voice.”
“Sister Midnight” was Nominated for Outstanding British Debut at this year’s BAFTA Awards, and was a hot ticket at the Cannes Film Festival where it was nominated for the Golden Camera award and in Director’s Fortnight. Also nominated for four BIFA awards, ‘Sister Midnight’ won Best Picture in the Next Wave Award at Austin’s Fantastic Fest and was warmly received at festivals across the globe.
“Sister Midnight” also features an original score written by Banks, which will receive an official release later this year.
Director Karan Kandhari adds:
“Art comes from the unconscious and the music of Iggy Pop was like a breadcrumb trail I followed through the unconscious as I wrote the film. In a beautiful collision of worlds, our talented composer Paul Banks has reinterpreted two Iggy songs in his own unique and haunting way, serving as celebration of both Iggy and the film’s themes. The lyrics to ‘Gimme Danger,’ a sort of broken misfit love song mirror the central relationship in the film.
‘Gimme Danger little stranger, and I’ll feel your disease…’
I would’ve called the film ‘Gimme Danger,’ but Jarmusch got there first.”
“Sister Midnight” is playing in UK and IE cinemas now, with a global release coming later this year. The rest of the eclectic soundtrack includes music from Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Holly, The Band, Motorhead, T. Rex, Blind Willie Johnson, The Stooges and more.
