Patrick Wolf is coming back to the US this fall, and this time he wants people on their feet. The UK singer-songwriter kicks off the second leg of his Tour of the Beast on October 27 in San Diego, then works his way across the country to New York, where things wrap up on November 21.

The first leg ended in LA back in June, and by most accounts it was a lot to take in — reviewers kept struggling to pin down what kind of show it even was, bouncing between folk, electronic pulse, and something closer to gothic cabaret. That’s kind of the point with Wolf. For round two, he’s flipping a bunch of the venues from seated to standing room, saying audiences were already on their feet half the time anyway.

This tour picks up where last year’s left off, when Wolf drove himself across the country for ten weeks behind Crying the Neck, his first album in thirteen years. It’s a quieter, more haunted record — songs about death and decay, written where he lives on the English coast — but the singles he’s put out since, “The Beast” and “The Laughing Dove,” lean harder into the theatrical side, harpsichord and all. Both were recorded in his home studio and feature an instrument he invented himself, the Kantalyre.

Wolf’s shows are still very much a one-man operation: dulcimer, viola, piano, loop pedals, and costumes he designs and builds himself for each song’s character. He’s been doing this since he was a teenager, and a documentary on his life — narrated by Tilda Swinton — just premiered at Sheffield Doc Fest, with a wider release expected later this year.
