“Be OK” by Deep Throat Choir

Coming off of the recent announce of their debut album Be OK, due out February 17th, 2017 through Bella Union, Deep Throat Choir are pleased to share the video for title track “Be OK.”

Deep Throat Choir is an all-female singing collective formed in 2013 by Luisa Gerstein. Having played in the bands Landshapes and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, the project was driven by the simple desire to bring music making back to a few basic elements: just voices and drums. Starting with a small group of four or five singers and infrequent get-togethers, the choir quickly grew in size, extending to friends, and friends of friends, before taking on a life of its own. Zara Toppin joined early on as the group’s drummer, writing distinct parts to give the songs a powerful energy and dynamic.

The group began to perform early on, crowding the stages of small venues on the indie circuit, and providing something refreshing from the traditional band set-up, in part by the sheer quantity of its female membership. Over the past few years, the choir have put on lots of parties and shows; collaborated with other artists such as Peggy Sue (also members), Matthew E White, Stealing Sheep, and Dillon; and performed at festivals and gigs across the country like Green Man, Wilderness, the Roundhouse, and Southbank Centre for WOW festival. They are currently collaborating on a project with Simian Mobile Disco, and a carefully curated set of disco arrangements with Horsemeat Disco and the Jazz Cafe for a special performance in January.

Their debut album, Be OK, is the culmination of the material they have been performing over the past three years. The album’s title track is one of three original Deep Throat Choir compositions, amongst arrangements of existing songs by such artists as Electrelane, Wildbirds and Peacedrums, MK, and Amy Winehouse. Working closely with Dan Blackett (Landshapes) and David Holmes at Soup Studios, the choir have made sure the record stays true to their live energy, while incorporating other instrumentation carefully across the tracks.
