“no roof no floor” by Scout Gillett

Singer/songwriter Scout Gillett has shared a live performance of “no roof no floor,” the title track of her debut album released last month via Captured Tracks. The video—which premiered earlier today, features El Kempner of Palehound (who plays on no roof no floor), and was filmed in a big wooden barn called The Chicken Shack in Stanfordville, NY (producer Nick Kinsey’s studio, where the album was originally recorded). It’s a stellar showcase of Scout’s signature, soaring vocals—she sails from a velvety, hushed whisper to dulcet spoken word to a cathartic belt with ease. Recorded upstate with the doors wide open, there’s a sense of spaciousness on no roof no floor befitting its title. “We did the vocal takes in the pitch black darkness of night in the country, void of light pollution,” Scout remembers. “I stared out at the stars through the open door as if singing to them.”

While “home” can be a tough thing for Scout to pinpoint, she found her place in Brooklyn’s DIY scene, playing in multiple live bands and even starting her own booking company to organize shows for other independent artists. Her intrepid nature results from a childhood spent running barefoot through rural Missouri and coming of age in Kansas City’s punk scene.
