“Music and Dreams” by Hannah Cohen (Robert Lester Folsom cover)

Originally recorded and self-released in 1976, Robert Lester Folsom’s LP Music and Dreams, was circulated among friends, record stores, and radio stations. Years later, after a 2010 reissue, the new 50th Anniversary Edition pairs a remastered treatment of the album alongside the original reel-to-reel demos and contemporary covers by Beach House and Hannah Cohen with her version of “Music and Dreams.” Music and Dreams: 50th Anniversary Edition arrives as double LP, CD, and digital editions, the demo material miraculously sourced by Folsom’s longtime collaborator Don Fleming, all material mastered by engineer Jessica Thompson.
Cohen says of Folsom, “I remember the first time I heard ‘My Stove’s on Fire’–it was the deep belly of winter in upstate New York when the sun drops behind the mountain and it seems like the day has no end and no amount of wood in the stove can warm your bones. Lester’s music brought so much light and mischief into my living room. My ears perked up immediately at the sweetness of his songwriting. When I met Lester last year at Newport Folk Fest I of course couldn’t keep my cool and had to tell him how much I loved his music and how it had helped me through a long winter.”
Folsom says of Cohen, “In Summer 2025 I played at the Newport Folk Festival, and Hannah Cohen’s trailer was next to ours. She was so friendly and open right off the bat. A real sweet spirit. We talked and talked and got along from our very first meeting. Her personality and music is so light and inspirational. Hannah’s the kind of person that I feel like I could invite over for a plain old bologna sandwich, and she wouldn’t bat an eye. “I’m so glad Hannah and I became friends, and I can’t wait for you to hear her cover of my song ‘Music and Dreams.’”
It was in the early 70s, after years of writing and playing music alone and with friends, that rural Georgia-born Folsom started laying down his original songs on a beloved Sears reel-to-reel. It’s this same reservoir of recordings that eventually became the foundation of Music and Dreams. The songs on the album were selected for a full studio treatment together with Stan Dacus, head engineer at Atlanta’s LeFevre Studios. Folsom eventually pressed 1,000 copies of the LP, 500 45s pairing “My Stove’s On Fire” with “Show Me to the Window,” and a run of eight-track tapes. But without the means to promote the album at a national scale, and with the band members moving on to other things, Folsom gradually turned his attention toward building a family and making a living in Jacksonville, FL, still playing but living in a void outside his dream of being a musician. Since the album’s 2010 reissue by Anthology Recordings, it has been planted in a timeless space primed for perennial rediscovery particularly among generations whose age reflects Folsom’s own when he wrote these songs.
In 2024 when Folsom stepped onstage at a sold-out show in Chicago to perform material from the album. Now, Folsom just wrapped the first leg of his extensive 23-date U.S. tour. On October 5, he will embark on the second leg including NYC’s Bowery Ballroom on October 11. Today, he announces his first ever UK/EU tour with five new dates in November.
