Chaos Angel
Maya Hawke
Listening to Chaos Angel, Maya Hawke’s latest LP, feels like stepping into a world that’s both intimate and expansive, where every note and lyric peels back another layer of Hawke’s life. Her storytelling is vivid, emotional, and deeply personal, inviting the listener into a space so close that you can almost feel her presence beside you.
Chaos Angel dances between lighter tempos and introspective lyrics. “Didn’t think I’d get in so I didn’t apply, now I’m a drunk hanger on hitting on the younger guy… now it’s me who’s missing out,” Maya sings overtop a catchy indie pop tempo. The song serves as a metaphorical reflection on the path Hawke has chosen, one that has seen her grow up on TV sets and in recording studios, missing out on the typical experiences of youth. Despite being only twenty-five, Hawke’s lyrics convey the wisdom and weariness of someone much older, likely a result of living many different lives in the entertainment world from a young age.
“Better” showcases Hawke’s vocal experimentation, though it feels a bit overproduced. With lyrics like “Oh no, don’t be sad, I’m the one who made you feel bad,” we’re treated to a range of depth created by the backup ensemble. While the vocal production can be distracting, the collaborative vocal efforts build a rich, textured sound. This dichotomy of brilliant songwriting overshadowed by overproduction recurs throughout the album. Tracks like “Dark” and “Hang In There” shine with clarity and emotional resonance, while others, like “Better” and “Big Idea,” struggle under the weight of heavy production choices.
The titular track, “Chaos Angel,” closes the album on an emotionally charged note. Hawke’s repeated apologies for her desires, set against a haunting piano melody, create a poignant ending that leaves a lasting impact. The song’s simplicity allows her raw emotion to take center stage, cementing the album’s overall theme of vulnerability and self-revelation.
Maya Hawke’s Chaos Angel is a masterclass in storytelling, with lyrics that draw you into her world and make you feel every high and low she’s experienced. The production choices, however, sometimes detract from the authenticity and intimacy of her songwriting. Despite this, the album remains a powerful testament to Hawke’s ability to weave complex emotions into her music, creating an experience that resonates deeply with the listener.
