Matthew Dear shares Audion SUBVERTICUL video

Matthew Dear releases Audion SUBVERTICUL live trailer, 'Origins' mini-documentary; New Audion live dates announced, starting at Moogfest Asheville, NC

As  audiences in Los Angeles and San Francisco recently discovered, SUBVERTICUL is an evening-long odyssey featuring a new live set from Audion and a custom stage set designed and built by Heather Shaw and her company Vita Motus — the team behind Amon Tobin’s ISAM tour. SUBVERTICUL’s visual centerpiece—a labyrinthine sculpture based off of the Audion “A” that pulses, spins, and grows in response to Audion’s ever-shifting rhythms—is just one component of the spectacle, as Dear developed the show’s music in close collaboration with Vita Motus. The results are a living, breathing fusion of leftfield techno, glowing LED lights and  sound-reactive visuals that’s at turns disorienting, beautiful, and terrifying. Check out the brand new trailer for Audion’s SUBVERTICUL directed by The Work Inc.. Audion has announced additional SUBVERTICUL live dates for North America and Europe as well, full list of dates below.

If there’s one thing that sets Matthew Dear apart as an electronic artist, it’s his gift for singing and songwriting—not the most common skill-set for someone who came up in Detroit’s techno scene, and certainly another side entirely of the man behind the Audion alias. In the fourth edition of Resident Advisor‘s film series ORIGINS with SONOS, the Ghostly International co-founder takes goes back to the small ranch town where it all started. Starting in the late ’90s, Dear made a name for himself with blistering club tracks on Ghostly International, but it was his voice, lyrics and swagger as a frontman that would later make him such a unique icon. The source of this talent goes back even further than Detroit to Dear’s childhood home in Kingsville, Texas, where his father, also a professional musician, taught him to sing and play guitar. In this episode of ORIGINS, Dear heads to Kingsville for the first time in over a decade to revisit spots from his childhood and “pick some guitar” with his dad. Watch the episode above.
