Live Review: Toronto welcomes back Buck Meek at The Great Hall

Last night, Buck Meek returned to Toronto as one stop on his solo North America tour in support of his most recent album The Mirror. Meek, who is also the guitarist and backing vocalist in Big Thief, played at The Great Hall to an energetic crowd, evidently full of long-time fans and supporters.
The night began with opener Kisser, a newly formed band that Meek himself is a part of. The band played many of their new tunes, including their single “Bad Boy Mountain”. After finishing up his set with Kisser, Meek once again took to the stage starting the night off with “Gasoline”. The mix of folk and alternative sounds, paired with Meeks poetic lyrics filled the space warm melodies. The band continued with songs like “God Knows Why” and “Can I Mend It?”. All throughout the venue, the crowd swayed and danced, bopping their heads along to the familiar tunes they’d come to love. The band consistently took moments to turn to each other, playing their instruments among themselves as well.
When Meek got to playing “Ring of Fire”, the energy from the crowd heightened even further. Fans sang along loudly to every line, reciting the song as if it was their own. You could feel the ground shaking as the crowd jumped along with the beat. Meek finished the song with a smile on his face, looking around as the entire audience cheered. As Meek wrapped up his set, fans yelled out for an encore.

In anticipation of the performance, the whole crowd began to stomp their feet, as if performing a drum roll before Meek’s return. After a few moments, Meek emerged alongside guitarist Adam Brisban to perform “Halo Light”.
Almost immediately, the energy of the crowd shifted from loud, stomping feet to quiet engagement, taking in every moment of the performance. Meeks vocals rang throughout the room as he began alone with his guitar. Part way through the song, Brisban joined in, playing melodies on his guitar that emulated the sounds of a violin. It was a performance that truly captivated the audience.
To round out the night, the remaining members of the band returned to play “Kiss My Mirror”. Once again, the crowd began to jump and sing, cheering throughout the entire performance. When the song came to a close, Meek waved goodbye to a sea of excited fans. Meek is scheduled to return to Toronto later this summer for the Big Thief show at Meridian Hall.
