There are few better ways to cap off a warm September weekend in Toronto than an outdoor party put on by icons of Hip-Hop and R&B.

Legendary Long Island rap group De La Soul kicked off the one Canadian stop of the tour with classic 90s hip-hop beats lifting the crowd to their feet early. “Who’s ready to party!?” yelled rapper/DJ Vincent Mason.

The group brought the energy, praising the weather for keeping the rain away, and taking selfies with the crowd mid-performance. Lead vocalist Kelvin Mercer introduced the group’s new project Cabin in the Sky, highlighting the emotional impact of nostalgia and its influence in their records past and present.

De La Soul danced their way off the stage, sending a heartfelt message to the group’s Canadian fans. “We love you Canada, don’t believe any of that bull**** going on down there.”

As Erykah Badu and The Alchemist made their way to the stage, RBC Amphitheatre erupted in a frenzy of cheers for the legendary duo. The co-headliners opened their set with a skit, awakening from their beds on either side of the stage and picking up a landline phone to speak to each other. Referencing their new joint album Before The World Blows, which was released just two weeks ago, the pair spoke of having “one more drink, one more conversation, and one more beat”… before the world blows. The comedic intro skit led into Erykah beginning the setlist with the first track from the new album, “Echos”.

The stage design set the tone for the evening with a gigantic U-shaped couch filling the stage, and The Alchemist sporting a Toronto Blue Jays hat, paying homage to the city.

Fans of all ages swayed side-to-side as Badu poured soul into the mic, riding the signature sounds which The Alchemist is known for. Angelic vocals contrasted by a heavy bass.

The show saw Erykah Badu display her many musical talents, incorporating a variety of supporting instruments with the likes of a bongo drum, synth keys & a traditional bead shaker used during fan favourite Witch Doctor.

Erykah Badu wrapped the night up with an emotional thank you for the support she has received over her 30-year career. She then emphasized that the love we have for ourselves is superior to worrying about validation from others.
