Library Voices announces “For John” EP

Library Voices return with a new EP, For John comes out June 10 on the band’s label imprint, Prairie Shag Recordings. Library Voices play 6/11 in Calgary

Library Voices return with a new EP, For John set for release on June 10, 2014 via the band’s own label imprint, Prairie Shag Recordings.

Recorded over a few short days in March of 2014, the seven-song EP is a posthumous tribute to their friend and supporter John Farrell. The band crossed paths with John at CMW several years ago and formed an instant friendship. Over the next three years John made countless“pilgrimages”(as he called them), often travelling from New York state by Greyhound or catching a ride with a friend to see the band perform at different points in Southern Ontario – and often bringing his favourite records or rare books to share with the band.  On July 19, 2012 John made the trek for a show in Hamilton. “It was the last time we got to see him,” remarked the bands lyricist Michael Dawson. “Brodie at the Casbah was kind enough to hang around late and let us visit. I think it was that night that we all realized what an important part of our band John had become. He was such a remarkable spirit, so rich with personality and cultural knowledge. It makes perfect sense to me why we took such a shine to John, but I have no idea what he ever saw in us…”

Back in the 70’s, John Farrell was an influential FM disc jockey from Buffalo, New York. Long time friend and co-worker Pat Feldballe once said John “liked overnights. (They) suited his personality.” John passed away unexpectedly in March of 2013.

The For John EP is the second release for Prairie Shag, Carl from the band curated a cassette compilation last winter documenting Saskatchewan’s weirdo underbelly. Library Voices promises you can expect more coasters and “vinyls” in coming months. Library Voices will head out on tour to support the EP release, with dates starting next month and have some special surprises planned at each of the stops including reunions by NovilleroDespistado, and 70’s prairie punk legends The Extroverts. The band will perform the new EP material alongside their previous work at all the shows and further EP details including advance listens to new tracks will follow soon.
