Lauren Mayberry, recently released her debut solo album, Vicious Creature, today, she is giving fans a new version of album track “Sorry, Etc, Etc” featuring Joe Talbot from IDLES. Mayberry has shows in the UK planned for March and will be back in the States in May, with shows announced at SF’s The Fillmore as well as Bottlerock Festival with more to come.

Of the new version, Mayberry says, “If you know me, you know how much I love Idles, so it really is an honor to have reinterpreted this song with Joe. We first connected during Covid when I did his Balley TV YouTube series, and have been quietly supportive of each other from the wings since. I messaged Joe last summer about working together and this is the song we decided on. We recorded his vocals in December at Brighton Electric when Idles had a night off on tour. I re-recorded my (screamier) vocals at home before Christmas with Sam Stewart, and was produced by my friend Paul Gallagher.”

Talbot chimes in, saying, “An honour and a joy to work with Lauren finally. I love the album and I’m happy to be a part of it. Fuck the king, she’s the king x”.

“So much of this process has been an exercise in empowering myself to listen to my own intuition – something I really trained myself out of,” Mayberry says. “That’s ultimately why you start making things – because you felt a feeling, and you wanted to articulate that somehow. I think it was important for me to relearn that kind of independence and recognize what I bring to any table I choose to sit at.”

Beyond her favorite artists, musicals such as Cabaret and Chicago were also an inspiration – works that dig into the dark, physical, and subversive sides of femininity. “Especially when it came to the visuals for the album, I knew I wanted them to be a part of the storytelling in a way I haven’t been able to do previously,” she says. “I wanted to have an ownership over my physical self and how I was involved in the visual part of the storytelling, so I felt like I was in the driving seat of the aesthetic rather than fitting into a landscape that wasn’t really for me.”

The CHVRCHES‘ vocalist solo album Vicious Creature features Greg Kurstin, Matthew Korma, Tobias Jesso Jr., Ethan Gruska, and Dan McDougall, she accessed not only a new world of inspiration but the deep well of creativity she’s had within her all along.
