Jamila Woods and Chance the Rapper drop track "LSD"

Chicago-based soul singer and poet Jamila Woods has announced her debut project Heavn due out July 11th via Chicago’s indie label Closed Sessions (Kweku Collins, oddCouple, Boathouse, Kipp Stone). The album features Saba, Donnie Trumpet, Chance the Rapper, Lorine Chia and production from oddCouple, Peter Cottontale, Carter Lang and more. Integral to the Chicago music scene since 2012 it was with her now defunct band M&O fka Milo & Otis where she first collaborated with aspiring artist Chance the Rapper on a track called “Lift Off.” They have since collaborated on CTR hallmark tracks “Sunday Candy” and later “Blessings.” Of the new single Woods says: “When I was a kid, getting on Lake Shore Drive from the south side to go downtown was magical. I lived on the east coast for a few years and people would laugh when I told them we have beaches and a lake we can swim in. I always wanted to write about that. A lot of people get Chicago wrong. I’ve developed this protective feeling about how we’re portrayed, and at the same time I’m acutely aware of the issues we face and the root causes of these issues. It’s important to me that there’s not just one story told about our city. LSD is an ode to Chicago, a song for the complicated love I have for my city.”

Not only a singer/songwriter and outspoken activist on Chicago’s south side, Woods is also a poet and associate artistic director of Young Chicago Authors; a non profit organization started in 2001 with the intent to give Chicago youth a platform to share their stories across the city and home of Chicago’s longest running youth open mic in the city.
