“Ideas of Space” By Tess Roby

Tess Roby has announced her new full-length Ideas of Space, will be released on her own record label, SSURROUNDSS on April 22, 2022. On the album, Roby acts as songwriter, producer, musician, music video and art director. Along with the news, Roby has shared the title track accompanied by a video that complements the album’s themes using the interplay of bold, contrasting visuals.

Tess Roby shares: “‘Ideas of Space’ signals the beginning of a new chapter. This song is hypnotic and sinuous, and sonically possesses a certain power and urgency. When I listen to it I imagine vast landscapes, a climb, a journey. Two distinct voices speak to each other; one lost, questioning, and the other guiding the way. I wanted to visually represent those voices and the journey I was on while making this album; one of self-discovery, hardship, adventure and in the end, confidence and strength.”

Tess goes on to say: “The video was made with a small and incredible team composed of DOPs and editors Patrick Boivin and George Allister (VideoCompany), and producer Sarah Mackenzie. It was an ambitious undertaking and I’m very proud of what we have made together.”

The album features collaborators Austin Tufts (Braids), Joseph Shabason and Ouri add intricate textures to Roby’s sonic landscapes. From the hypnotic urgency of title track “Ideas of Space” to the cinematic ambiance of “Euphoria in August”, the album shifts effortlessly from jubilant highs to contemplative lows, echoing the concepts of duality which run throughout the record. As the triumphant album cover announces, the music celebrates the flow of life in all its contradictions; her face bathed in light, her body framed in shadow.

“All this time alone, it has taught me one thing” Tess Roby says, “How to feel alive.” Ideas of Space pulls the listener into the artist’s inner world; where the mind is a room and the body, a house. Dualities of light and dark, heavy and effervescent, physical and nonphysical pass back and forth into each other. Roby writes intuitively: her lyrics drift between dreams, memories and reality, and are brought to life by the rich intimacy of her voice. Circling loops of synth rise and fall alongside interweaving vocal patterns, building effortlessly to create minimal yet complex soundscapes.
