Iowa band Hex Girls should be on your radar. The band write songs that throw us back to the good old days of David Bowie, T Rex, and if we dare a bit of Iggy Pop, which is a damn fine thing. Watch their new video for “Rabid Creature,” and see for yourselves. The Cedar Falls Iowa Quintet will be on my stereo this weekend, mixed in with a can of Pabst and tumbler of Bourbon. Hex Girls are set to perform at Hinterland Music Festival in 2021 alongside Orville Peck, Yola, and more (COVID situation allowing, of course).

Guitarist and singer John Fisher on “Rabid Creature

“Rabid Creature is very much about duality and uncertainty — struggling to choose what’s right for yourself or what’s right for others and not knowing how it will all shake out in the end. We tried to capture this sense of uneasiness in the contrast of the verses and chorus. The only thing we could really accomplish in 2020 was socially distanced outdoor videos, so we figured we would make a trip to the family farm to shoot a wild “Spaghetti Western meets Alice in Wonderland” video. I think the video captures the dream-like quality of the verses as well as the carnage of the chorus.”
