Montreal-based songwriter and musician Helena Deland returns with Altogether Unaccompanied, Vol. V, the 2-track newest installment of her series of EPs which she began releasing in 2018.

Helena Deland shares: “When I finished recording what I thought would be my first album, in 2017, I was faced with a miscellaneous bunch of songs. Instead of wiggling them into the expected format, I released them as a series of short EPs called ‘Altogether Unaccompanied,’ volumes I-IV. Volume V is out today, and the series becomes an open-ended place for me to share songs which haven’t made it onto albums, or which seem to exist on their own, more or less unaccompanied.”

The release of Altogether Unaccompanied, Vol. V comes with a video for the track “Silver and Red” shot by Nik Arthur, capturing a timelapse view of a quiet brook fighting through winter ice.

Lyrics

1.Silver and Red

Towards the end of the day
It’s impossible to situate
The sun in the sky
A source to the light
Looks like it’s sliding
Out of the trees
And into the breeze
Cool and inviting
Claw-shaped leaves
Last to hold on
This far along in the yearThe air, silver and clear
Bed of pine needles
You tread, my dear
Go to the lake
Still as a plate
Wait ’til others leave
To dunk your head in
Freezing water
Trickles down your cheeks
And into the collar
Of your apple-red coat
You walk ahead and I note
It is apple,
Apple-coloured red
And all the ways the light
Dances round your head

2.Bigger Pieces

Amazing how fast I stop caring
Good to know
Hideouts were built and left, it seems
See the one you built for me
In the name of all I’ll care for
I will leave
Won’t you hold back for me?
Hold back
Won’t you hold back for me?
Hold back
You say all that happens to me will be kept here jealously
I say how could you not tell me?
Then say all your shapes will reform if I wait here patiently
I need, I need bigger pieces
I have held back more than I can keep
Should I love them?
They are so beautiful
I love all of them

Makes me feel like quite a womanFrightening how fast I stop caring
Won’t you hold back for me?
Hold back
Won’t you hold back for me?
Hold back
