Brooklyn band Wetsuit have shared a new video for “Hashem,” the track is now available via Substitute Scene Records. Hashem was produced by Asheville-based Alex Farrar, known for producing Wednesday’s Rat Saw God, MJ Lenderman’s Manning Fireworks and Indigo de Souza’s “All of This Will End.”

“Hashem” is an ode to the powerful matriarchy in lead singer Allison Becker’s family, with verses inspired by quotes from her 93 year-old bubbe (“you don’t know your own strength” or “only pour as much as you can drink”), and lyrics borrowed from a Jewish children’s folk song.
Allison Becker says of the video: “The music video features 4 generations of women in my family doing what we do every year during the high holidays: making challah. It’s spliced with old family footage of us in the kitchen or eating together, and everyone lip syncs a lyric, including my 93 year old bubbe and my 6 year old niece. Everyone did great but my bubbe was the real star of the show. She’s this powerful matriarch that glues my family together, and it shows in the music video.”

After years of supporting indie rock boyfriends from the sidelines, Becker decided to channel her own voice, leading to an evolution that transformed her childhood bedroom compositions into a full-fledged rock band. She is joined by original members Anders Nils (lead guitar), Paul DeSilva (bass), with Tess Kramer joining on drums in 2023.

Wetsuit released their debut album Sugar, I’m Tired on Substitute Scene Records in 2023, followed by tour dates with Haley Blais, Good Looks, Gustaf, Covey and Oceanator, and 9 shows at SXSW 2024.
