It’s has been awhile but with the release of the new album from Southern California’s Haim sisters, we can all be reminded how freaking awesome this band is. With I Quit the sisters have crafted essentially the ultimate break up album. Like the Christmas movies that play on cable all day every day in December, I Quit should become the soundtrack to every relationship rehab session. The secret weapon that the album has compared to other “break up” albums is that it isn’t a bummer in the slightest. It’s bright, buoyant and endlessly charming. Kind of just like the sisters themselves.

The whole thing kicks off with “Gone” which plays out like a checklist off all the great things that are gonna happen now that an unsatisfying relationship has run its course. The addition of the George Michael “Freedom” sample in the chorus is also a huge delight. “All Over Me” is the quintessential booty call when a relationship is over but you just can’t shake it yet or need to get over it by getting under someone else. Musically the trip remains top notch. There’s something so unique about their playing and song arrangements that can make you feel like you’re crushing some sunny street in Los Angeles. It’s like an inherent groove runs through the whole proceedings and it’s kind of unshakable.

I Quit isn’t just a one note affair. The sisters really show how diverse they can be. From the playground rap intro of “Relationships” to the country twang of “The farm” to the beautiful, in the way that family can only do, harmonies on “Cry”, Haim makes the most to show off of their talents on the album. It’s nice to have them back and even nicer to feel that they have our backs when we go through another break up.
