Grumpy debut new single "Twenty Five"

Grumpy is sharing their first single 0f 2026, with “Twenty Five,” the track is now available Bayonet Records (Beach Fossils, Mei Semones), and follows their 2024 EP Wolfed and 2025’s Piebald. The group have released a series of collaborative singles recorded with Sidney Gish, Precious Human, Claire Rousay and Pink Must. Grumpy is led by New York City artist Heaven Schmit. Grumpy have several dates dotted through the summer on both sides of the Atlantic, where they will be joined by Sloppy Jane, Sarah Meth, Al Menne and several others.

Schmitt caught the attention of country music superstar Zach Bryan, who was immediately taken by their voice and tapped them to sing on his 2025 album With Heaven On Top, Subsequently, much of Schmitt’s last year has been spent touring the globe as part of his backing band.

is about Schmitt’s girlfriend and bandmate, Ellie Long. Appropriately reminiscent of the pop-rock bangers dominating the airwaves of Grumpy’s youth, the song is about time travel. Long has admitted that she wishes she could go back in time and transition as a little kid, to live the girlhood she always wanted.

“Twenty Five,” is about loving her so much and having this really selfish thought of like, Oh God, what if you could do that and we never meet?” Schmitt confesses. “The song is me telling her, If you ever get that opportunity, please leave a clue so that you can get back to me in the present.” He sings with her, their voices distorted together: “You and me, dressing up / growing our hair long / singing love songs.

Schmitt adds:

“Ellie and I were at home and we were talking about being trans and time travel, and she said she wished she could go back in time and transition at a younger age. I then had such a  sefilsh thought; I worried that, if she went back in time and changed something, what if it altered the future such that we never met? So I told her, if she ever gets the opportunity to travel back in time, make sure she can get back to me and meet me in 2025. The lyrics in the beginning sum it up “when you travel back, leave a clue so that you can still find me when you get to 2025.”
