"Grey" by Ashley Shadow is Northern Transmissions Song of the Day.

Vancouver artist Ashley Shadow will release her new album Only the End set on September 24, 2021 via Felte (ERAAS, PVT, Soviet Soviet, Sextile). contributing artists on the LP include Bonnie “Prince” Billy sings, Paul Rigby (pedal steel guitar with Neko Case), Ryan Beattie (Himalayan Bear) and Colin Cowan (Elastic Stars) with production coming from Joshua Wells (Black Mountain, Lightning Dust).

Ashley Shadow previously performed as part of Vancouver favourites The Organ, before releasing her debut solo LP in 2016. Over the past the past, she has contributed backing vocals to Bonnie’s album, Lie Down in the Light (Drag City), Pink Mountaintop’s Outside Love (Jagjaguwar) and The Cave Singers’ Welcome Joy (Matador) – interestingly, her twin sister, Amber Webber plays in the group Lightning Dust and co-founded psych-rock band, Black Mountain.

The new album was written over two years in Ashley’s apartment in Vancouver, it definitely mirrors some of that moody introspection synonymous with the Pacific Northwest, however, whereas her debut was very much engulfed by that world and ran with the sense of solitude and gloom, this new effort balances it with a palpable sense of hope. As a concept, the album looks to explore ideas of realism and contended acceptance rather than hunting for non-existent utopias. Despite only being two solo records in, Ashley’s had a wealth of experience helping out on different projects, bringing a real maturity to her songwriting.
