Slow Mass aare back with new single “Freeze Frame,” Speaking on the new song, the band’s Mercedes Webb (bass, vocals, piano, synth) says “‘Freeze Frame’ is about the relationship we develop with ourselves over the course of our lives and the pull between accepting who we are and wishing we were someone else.” The new song follows previous singles “Blur,” featuring fellow Chicagoan NNAMDï and Jon Nuñez (Torche), and “Hogtied,” which was accompanied by a video directed by Marisa Dabice of Mannequin Pussy.

Low on Foot was written on and off between 2016 and 2021, the band’s lineup expanded to a six-piece, and then a septet since this recording of the album, bringing in familiar faces and fresh perspectives into the creative fold. Recorded in Chicago with Scott Evans (SUMAC, Thrice), the record features guest spots from a list of long-admired musicians, including NNAMDï, Jon Nuñez (Torche), Nick Reinhart (Tera Melos), Macie Stewart (Finom) and many more.

Speaking on the upcoming album, the band’s Dave Collis says “I can’t speak on all the themes. since I didn’t write all of the lyrics, but a couple common ones on the album for me are about my parents, specifically them being laid off from their jobs in old age. The title track is about my mother, who was a social worker for over twenty years, being unceremoniously let go from her job, blamed for a mistake of another colleague. The job is relatively low wage with an intense emotional strain. Working with foster kids, dealing with families battling domestic abuse, drug addiction, etcetera. She dedicated her life to it, only to be discarded. ‘At Blame’ is similar in that it’s about my father who was an architect for over twenty-five years, only to be let go in old age so that the firm could hire new, young blood for cheaper. Considering the age he was let go at, about sixty, he didn’t have much choice but to be forced into retirement early. If anything, a lot of the record deals with loss and the fallout one is left to navigate.”
