Cancel Me (I'm Tired)
Fat Dog
Fat Dog return with Cancel Me (I’m Tired), following their debut album, Woof. The South East London-based seven-piece strive for an expansive mixture of electro-punk, art-pop, and techno rock, never really adhering to any single genre. Every track that Joe Love, Morgan Wallace, Chris Hughes, Michael Dunlop, Ellis Dickson, Jed Bevington, and Dillon Harrison piece together is just plain fun. Cancel Me (I’m Tired) is somehow less tiresome than its predecessor, playing out like one well-paced, massive rave instead of several exhausting little parties
After making the rounds on tour since their breakout, Fat Dog have turned up the dial on being unapologetic, the core of what makes their live performances stand out. “Smile and Wave” is symphonic. Resembling the sound of Canadian duo Angine de Poitrine with its high-tempo drive, the opening track is instantly dynamic.
Ahead of the release of the album via Domino Recording Company, they shared five singles: “Go F*** Urself,” “Cancel Me (I’m Tired),” “Heart of Darkness,” “S*** Love,” and “Call It What You Want.” The blunt hooks can be repetitive at times, though they carry a ton of electrifying instrumentals and synths. The remaining tracks provide intense contrast, especially “Snakes,” “Bad Dog,” “The Devil,” and closing track “Aliens.” While occasionally leaning toward the texturally melodic, Fat Dog still touch upon the darkly humorous and irreverently twisted.
Fat Dog might very well be a type of futuristic rock ’n’ roll. Cancel Me (I’m Tired) achieves what has been tried before, yet the collective maintains a strong line of artistic growth. The impeccable use of strings and brass fills the gaps in the psychedelia, making their work come across as transformative. Under all the rowdiness, Cancel Me (I’m Tired) gets to a place that makes room for sincerity. Fat Dog may have an unmarked path ahead, though they are more than willing to call the shots.
