Alex Orange Drink shares “Everything Is Broken,” the latest single from his forthcoming album Victory Lap (#23), dropping May 9 via Conor Oberst’s record label Million Stars. Victory Lap (#23) was recorded and mixed after undergoing radiation treatment, the song finds Alex embracing his darkest moments and the light that comes on the other side.

Alex Orange Drink on the new single: “Everything is Broken. A system, a heart, a nation, a spirit. Recorded and mixed after harrowing radiation sessions, this song explores the hopelessness that tries to swallow us in the darkest night and the light that rises in the morning. It’s an embrace of imperfection, depression and brokenness. Was it Leonard Cohen, Jeff Lewis or Luke Chiaruttini who said, “It’s the ones who’ve cracked that the light shines through” – that “there’s a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in”? It’s been said many times, in many ways, by many optimistic pessimists. When something collapses in hate, it can be re-built with love. Everything is broken, maybe that’s OK.”

Victory Lap (#23) is the third solo release from Alex Zarou Levine, best known as the lead singer and songwriter of Brooklyn punk band The So So Glos. In June 2023, following a sold-out show at Bowery Ballroom, Levine was diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, a rare and serious form of cancer affecting his salivary gland. Written and recorded in the midst of his intensive treatment, Victory Lap (#23) captures the intensity of his experience while maintaining an undercurrent of defiant optimism. The debut single “The Future’s A Riot,” was accompanied by a music video featuring footage chronicling his diagnosis and writing/recording during his first week of treatment. The follow-up single “Queen Victoria” (feat. Conor Oberst) opens a conversation about self destruction and mental health.

Victory Lap (#23) follows Alex Orange Drink’s 2021 full length Everything Is Broken Maybe That’s OK and 2018 solo debut Babel On. Last year, he was featured as a guest vocalist on Bright Eyes’ song “Rainbow Overpass” and co-writer of 7 songs on their new album Five Dice, All Threes. As co-founder of venues Market Hotel and Shea Stadium, Levine has been a key figure in New York City’s D.I.Y. scene for nearly two decades. A New York native of both Palestinian and Jewish descent, he has lived with Homocystinuria, a genetic disorder that requires a strict diet and an orange flavored daily medication, the namesake of his alias Alex Orange Drink.
