Peaer, release their new LP doppelgänger on Danger Collective. The New York based project led by Peter Katz have not released an album in nearly 7 years. The band are sharing a final preview of the album with “End of The World.” To coincide with the single’s release the band have announced an NYC release show that will take place at Nightclub 101 on January 30th with Wendy Eisenberg and Kissy Noises supporting. singles “Bad News” and “Button.”

Katz on “End of The World”:

“”End of The World” was inspired by a time that i thought I got hacked and had my identity stolen. i feel as if i am relatively internet and tech-savvy, but this was a pretty convincing email! they said that they had all my data and information and were going to delete it all if I didn’t pay them some amount of bitcoin. I’d heard of that happening to people (I think on a podcast?) so it did have me kind of spiral. I didn’t end up doing anything about it and it went away. Its not like i have many valuable assets that anyone would really want to steal in the first place. Regardless, the feeling of paranoia in the modern age definitely influenced my lyrics on this one. It started with the first few lines which I thought are pretty illustrative of an over-thinker (’the distance between each step/the duration of each breath’). Musically, the song ended up being a more traditional pop-structure, but we had a lot of fun tinkering with the transitions, dynamics, and chord melodies to make it a bit more rewarding to play and listen to. Sonically, it still feels very bright, while the subject matter remains in a paranoid, unsettled place.”

A 2020 tour was derailed by the pandemic, and as things slowed down Katz was forced to face uncomfortable truths. “I took the year to take a full break from music, as I had begun to grow resentful towards music as a career,” he remembers. “Perhaps that resentment is still here. I’m working on it.” As lockdown restrictions were lifted, the trio had settled into demanding new careers. It was challenging to regain momentum.

The path to doppelgänger — Peaer’s first record in six years — was gradual, and features songs that span the entirety of the band’s existence, with some ideas originating as far back as 2015. “Part of the Problem” is a cynical time capsule from the 2016 election cycle; “No More Today” and “IDWBWY” stretch back to 2018.

“The songs spanned such a long time that it really feels like a different person wrote the first song versus the last song,” Katz ponders. “In some ways that is what this is about: Literally changing over time, then looking back to see how different you were. These songs are about reflection and reckoning with your mental projection of yourself vs. who you literally are. The concept of a Doppelgänger immediately resonated with me for this reason.

This record ended up being very reflective and personal, but also it felt like I was trying to analyze myself from a different perspective,” he muses. “End of the World” is inspired by a terrifying spam email that made him believe data was held hostage. “No More Today” confronts getting too old to behave stupidly. “Button” toys with the shift to the life of an office job. “Button my shirt, time to pretend I’m a normal human being / Counting up my digits, hope that none of them have gone missing,” Katz sings.
