Doldrums Releases “Egypt” 12″ On Arbutus
Doldrums Releases “Egypt” 12″ On Arbutus, New Video For “Copper Girl” | On Tour Now With UMO
Recontextualing the bombshelter desperation of the Montreal noise scene into an 8 minute warehouse club jam that’s far more ambitious, sophisticated, and accessible than anything he’s attempted before, “Egypt” takes from UK and European electronic music but places an unmistakably North American attitude at its core. Doldrums’ music deals with the loss of the individual, a bodiless, Soma-fried peeling back of surface emotions to expose an attitude both utterly bleak and mesmerizing. On “Egypt”, his androgynous voice comes across mid-panic attack, floating in a sea of chopped up samples, disembodied vocals and primal percussion that almost does bring to mind an ancient, crumbling civilization.
Doldrums, who released “Egypt” on Berlin label Souterrain Transmissions, partnered with Montreal’s Arbutus Records for the North American release of the 12 inch. Having been an integral part of the Arbutus community since it’s inception, Doldrums just finished an extensive European tour with frequent collaborator Grimes. This past weekend, Doldrums embarked on a short run of North American dates with Unknown Mortal Orchestra, leading into NXNE and multiple summer festival appearances.
