“No Divide” by You Won’t

Massachusetts-based duo You Won’t today premiered their music video for “No Divide”, the second single from their forthcoming album Revolutionaries. Directed by the band’s drummer/multi-instrumentalist Raky Sastri, the comically surreal clip finds singer/guitarist Josh Arnoudse and longtime You Won’t collaborator Ewen Wright prancing their way through the outskirts of Los Angeles in a bizarrely foppish dance-off, all under the watchful eye of an omnipotent cymbal-banging monkey. Sastri explains: “The conventions of Morris Dancing, a traditional English folk dance comprised of rhythmic unison footwork and sword-like stick play, proved an oddly appropriate vehicle to embody the song’s themes of cooperation and conflict as a literal duel – if not to the death, at least to the disco. In the end, sometimes you just gotta shut up and dance… with a monkey.”

You Won’t kick off a North American tour on April 29th in Portland, Maine, with shows in Brooklyn, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington D.C., and more to follow.

Self-produced by the band over a period of two and a half years, Revolutionaries is the follow-up to their 2012 debut LP Skeptic Goodbye, following support slots with The Joy Formidable, Lucius, Josh Ritter, and Deer Tick, among others. More expansive and sonically adventurous than its predecessor, Revolutionaries is at its heart a reflection on the crumbling of youthful idealism in the face of the compromises and moral ambiguities of adulthood. The band’s musical core is the merging of Arnoudse’s evocative lyrics, lilting melodies and punkish guitar with Sastri’s nimble, jazz-inflected percussion and seemingly endless supply of obscure instrumentation (whirly tubes, electronic bagpipes, and singing saw are all employed here). Taken as a whole, the album is a thoughtful and frequently witty meditation on what we choose to believe, who we choose to believe in, and how these choices shape our lives. Perhaps most importantly, it represents the latest and most public salvo in a revolution that the members of You Won’t have privately been leading, in some form or another, for the past 17 years.
