Deadboy RETURNS from the nighttime abyss with a new single and his first video for Numbers, directed by Thomas Traum.
About the director Thomas Traum
Thomas Eberwein. A visual artist and director based in London, specializing in making images and creating experiences using digital tools. He works under the name of Thomas Traum.
The film takes the form of a dreamlike short that zooms slowly through technicolor smoke and shards of neon light as you are transported straight into the mind of an astral explorer reaching the end of his journey. Accompanying the visuals, Deadboy surprises with a gently unfolding multidimensional synthwerk that recalls the epic soundtracks of science fiction classics from the late ’70s and early ’80s.
“Return” is taken off Deadboy’s forthcoming EP of the same name for Numbers, out April 28th, 2014 digitally and on 12” vinyl.
All decade, Deadboy has been one step ahead. Debuting in 2009 with “U Cheated,” the South London producer’s blend of house and 2-step rhythms, R&B sample flips and the innercity heartbreak aesthetic of r’n’g and bassline house didn’t only cement him as one of the UK’s most promising new producers – along with peers Mosca, Julio Bashmore et al – but someone who was quietly ahead of the competition. As Bashmore put it in a recent interview, “Deadboy really pioneered that chopped up R&B vocal over nice chords thing. He absolutely smacked it, it’s never been done better than that.”
The biggest developments in Deadboy’s sound have come on his EPs for Numbers. “Here 4 U,” the lead track from 2011’s Here, was lurid UK Funky, while on “Wish U Were Here,” he slowed down to 125bpm for disembodied disco. Come 2013’s BLAQUEWERK, the rulebook had been completely torn up, with warehouse techno, jungle and more taken to forsaken places.
