Dari Bay has share “Chevy,” the latest single/video from their forthcoming album Surprise Wish, available June 26th via Double Double Whammy. Dari Bay is the project of Burlington, VT multi-artist Zack James.This fall, the band will support Squirrel Flower, on a run of East Coast dates, starting September 29 in Brooklyn, NY.

“Chevy” is a character study about control freaking your way to loneliness, riding a constricting guitar figure until an instrumental outro echoes the narrator’s walled-in solitude. The accompanying video was directed by James with additional filming by band member Nina Cates.

James comments: “”Chevy” is me trying and failing to dominate my surroundings. I’m getting rid of the things in my life that are out of my control, which just isolates me and makes my world smaller and smaller. By the end of the song I am trapped in a box with no door and no windows. The music video tells a similar story, except at the end I break out into the sunlight.”

Growing up in a musical family, James tried his hand at everything — learning drums as a child, DJ’ing, rap beats, production, elementary school punk rock. He eventually became a multi-faceted and in-demand player: providing drums on recordings and tours for old friends Lily Seabird and Greg Freeman, serving as one of the primary songwriters in Robber Robber, joining Unknown Mortal Orchestra as a full-time member, all while steadily concocting Dari Bay’s next chapter.

Surprise Wish came together slowly over time as James balanced multiple projects while finishing college. Seeking to abandon the genre detours of past Dari Bay releases, James made much of Surprise Wish alone without real studio time.

Dari Bay has previously toured and played alongside MJ Lenderman, Horse Jumper of Love, Water From Your Eyes, Cola, TAGABOW, Dutch Interior, Being Dead, and LUCY (Cooper B. Handy). Last month, James and the band — Cates (bass), Joey Krouse (guitar), and Will Krulak (guitar) — supported Whitney on their east coast tour.
