Motorists are back with new single “Cristobal,” Engineered across studios in Toronto, Brooklyn, and Gothenburg, with mixing by Chris Cohen songwriter and producer known for his work in Deerhoof and his solo records on Captured Tracks – and mastering by Mike Nolte, out now via We Are Time, which is a label run and founded by Chandra Oppenheimer known for the 80’s disco group Chandra (sampled by the Avalanches in “Subway”) and was also a muse for Andy Warhol.

“Cristobal” was written shortly after frontperson Craig Fahner relocated to New York, the song emerged from a mix of disillusionment and defiance. “I was reading about “seasteading” – a concept beloved by weird tech bro billionaires, who aim to build their own autonomous territories as luxury tax havens separate from the rest of the world. The song is about not wanting to wake up in a world where the Earth is being used up to fuel a vision of the future that doesn’t involve ordinary people. It’s reflecting on various attempts to build a new society, and how those utopian ideas seem to forsake the idea of making the world we already live in more livable,” says Fahner.

“Cristobal” was engineered by Jesse Turnbull at Taurus Recording in Toronto, with additional engineering by Ian Rose at Daisy Chain Studios (Brooklyn), Dylan Frankland at Palace Sound (Toronto), and Philip Fritz at Nacksving Studios (Gothenburg).
