The Coin that Broke the Fountain Floor

Clementine Valentine

“The things that I could give to you, by ways of old make something new,” sisters Clementine and Valentine Nixon sing in their Kate Bush operatic, almost gothic voicing, on their latest offering, The Coin That Broke the Fountain Floor, out on Flying Nun Records this Friday. Formerly known as Purple Pilgrims, the New Zealand duo, who also grew up and played many a show in renegade gallery spaces and rogue music venues across Hong Kong, are from a long line of bards and songstresses.

With songs that are filled with old gods and goddesses like Jupiter and Venus, mythical creatures like the Selkie, and ruminations upon sand turning to pearls and air tight ships, they are a dramatic group that fill our age-old need for good storytelling. And their voices are fit to imbue their tales with the drama they demand.

With a number of songs that act like little plays, (“The play will play out without me,”) their role is more than musicians but myth makers. This album, as the title suggests, is about “the tipping point extremes of recent years, colored by dreams crushing, wishes gathering, and an abundance of hope.” Their songs recall Aldous Harding and Weyes Blood, two artists that they have toured with, internationally. Like both of those artists, the lyrics of Clementine Valentine could stand on their own, as beautiful dramatic poetry, but are only enhanced by their expert vocal performances.

“Actors tears water your eyes / Broken tears, such a surprise / The serpent came and sold you lies / Now actors tears water your eyes.” The artist’s job is to move us, to elicit emotion and passion and resolve. They accomplish that on this album, through their evocative storytelling and pathos-filled performances. Suggested for fans of Cocteau Twins, Kate Bush, and Beach House, and regular attenders of the theater, especially lovers of the Greek plays.
