Chandeen, will release Mercury Retrograde, on February 28, via Kalinkaland Records. The full-length features features vocal & songwriting contributions from a range of artists including Chandeen lead singer Julia Beyer, British composer/multi-instrumentalist Holly Henderson, French singer/songwriter KITTY, and 16-year-old German artist Odile.
Mercury Retrograde was inspired by bandleader Harald Löwy’s passion for astronomy and singer Julia Beyer’s fascination with astrology, the two disciplines providing a properly cosmic foundation for Chandeen’s ambient sound. Ahead of the album’s arrival, Chandeen have shared a new video for “Vanish.”
Harald Löwy (bandleader): “‘Vanish’ was one of the first songs we wrote for Mercury Retrograde. I‘ve always loved this song, right from the first moment we created this stellar guitar sound and the melancholic harmonies at the chorus. It defines the whole vibe of the album, and Julia’s ominous lyrics make it an extra special song to me.“
Julia Beyer (vocalist): “Working on the vocal part for this song was really special for me – it all came very naturally. Lyrically, this song is especially close to my heart and very different from the dreamy and ethereal atmospheres I usually try to create. I guess there was something cathartic about it. I am also very happy how the video we did reflects this idea so perfectly. The flickering lights and blurry lines between reality and madness act as a great metaphor for traumatic experiences with gaslighting and other unpleasant interpersonal occurrences.”
Launched three decades ago, Chandeen is the project of Harald Löwy. Chandeen’s music is described as indie-tronic dreamcore. Mercury Retrograde was inspired by Löwy’s passion for astronomy and singer Julia Beyer’s fascination with astrology, the two disciplines providing a properly cosmic foundation for Chandeen’s ambient, interstellar sound.
