“Trail Mix (3pm)” by Cautious Clay
Cautious Clay’s “Trail Mix (3pm)” serves as our stunning new video of the day. The track highlights his brand new album, The Hours: High Noon, which is out today via Concord Records. Consequently, this release successfully wraps up the Hours trilogy that started with The Hours: Morning and carried into last year’s The Hours: Night.
To mark the big release, he has put out an official music video for “Trail Mix (3pm)” to give fans an intimate visual look into one of the album’s main focus tracks. The clip comes from longtime collaborator Haoyan Of America, who gives it a warped, dreamlike quality. This aesthetic fits right in with what the song’s actually about — all the detours and second-guessing that come with trying to hold a relationship together.
Paths keep bending and looping back on themselves in the visual. Crucially, this tracks with the song’s whole point: sometimes you just end up where you were always headed.
“This song is honestly about the feeling of being physically open with multiple people but emotionally and spiritually aligned with a person,” Cautious says. “Truly embodying the spice of life.”
It’s a fitting centerpiece for High Noon, which finds Cautious somewhere between the clean structure of Morning and the loose, darker energy of Night. Therefore, the sound is more settled and a little more reflective. There’s a reggae influence running through the record that wasn’t as present before. This gives the whole thing an easy, midday feel even when the subject matter gets complicated.
After two records spent finding the edges, this album feels like Cautious finally settling into himself, and it shows. It’s less about resolving every question the trilogy raised. Instead, it is more about learning to sit comfortably inside them, rather than rushing to answer everything at once.
