Holy Wars have shared the music video for their first official single “I Can’t Feel A Thing,” and the first song that the band has released from their debut Mother EP, which will be coming out June 30th. In the video, Holy Wars’ fierce and dynamic singer Kat Leon describes it as “grief taking a form as four figures move me through a dance of darkness. This stage of grief was when I felt completely numb, like a ghost myself, barely existing. This song was healing for me and the words to describe this lack of feeling and yet the inner empowerment that would develop, much like you can’t hurt the one with nothing left to lose.”
Holy Wars’ dark-pop sound falls somewhere between Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Crystal Castles – it’s heavy and melodic, mathematically precise but still plaintive and emotional. Leon’s art has always been inspired by the spectre of death and the occult, but in 2015, she suddenly lost both of her parents within months of each other, plunging her into a grief the likes of which she had never known. After taking time off to properly grieve, Leon re-emerged in early 2017, altered as an artist by her darkest days, and Holy Wars became an extrapolation of the turmoil she felt inside.
Holy Wars’ missive to the world comes in the form of a double EP, Mother and Father, with Father’s release to follow in late Summer. Each EP is dedicated to her respective parents, and, dark as her thoughts and words may be, Kat Leon comes across not as nihilistic or hopeless; even on a song like “Orphan” (“Everyone that you know / They all will go away in time / And you are left alone”), she presents as someone who’s reached a higher understanding and confidence (“Dip your head in gold / The crowning of an orphan.”).
