Bunny White, has shared new single/video for “Jolly Rogers.” The track was mixed by Kenny Gilmore, known for his work with Weyes Blood, Sudan Archives, Storefront Church and more. Featuring 70s wurlitzers, funky guitars, and Bee Gees inspired harmonies, grief and the memory of family vacations past take center stage in Bunny White’s latest single.

Along with the new track, Bunny White has announced her self-produced debut album The Higher the Hair, the Closer to God will arrive on June 27th. The LP is the Baltimore-native saxophonist, vocalist, and pianist’s Marina Ray White’s first full-length project and first release since 2019. Drawing from a mix of analog instrumentation and digital emulation, the 11-song, 45 minute debut weaves together a Lynchian, John Waters-esque technicolor world of country pop, bossa nova, ragtime, chamber pop and disco.

“When you lose a parent as a child you can’t really process the grief because you aren’t old enough to comprehend it. And at least for me, not processing that really warped my brain and calcified this sense of loneliness, isolation, and anxiety. By the time I hit my mid-20s I realized that I had become an incredibly neurotic person, and though I didn’t entirely know when I lost myself, I started writing these songs. At first, they were these frenetic, high octane songs about the fear of death and loss of control and substance abuse, but eventually they gave way to more sincere songs about my mother. It was like I had to clear those cobwebs and debride the wound to find the source of the pain, and so I see this album not only as a testament to the time in my life when I was processing the grief, but also as a eulogy and a way for me to incorporate her into my life. I started digging through family photos, watching shows I knew she liked, buying stuff at antique stores that reminded me of her, basically anything to reverse engineer a relationship with a person I had lost but never entirely knew. And the more I embodied her, the closer to her I became, but also the more I was able to stylize and play with aesthetics and different versions of myself and it was honestly so much fun. I felt like she was with me. So there it was: the higher the hair, the closer to God.”
