kelz is the project of Kelly Truong, a Vietnamese-American multi-instrumentalist and producer from Orange County, California, the artist recently signed to Bayonet Records (Mei Semones, Beach Fossils) who will release her album A Sweet Passerby on July 24th. Today, kelz is sharing the album’s second single,  “Breathe.”  The track is accompanied by a video directed be Christian Y Kim and styled by Jenny Nayoung Kim, known for her work with Luna Li and Eyedress.

kelz says of the track:

 “Breathe” explores my desire for peace & safety while finding a way to release my inner frustrations. It is one of my more simpler songs in production that focuses on these themes, lyrically and allows my voice to take center. In the Breathe MV, I explore memories that are fragmented and distorted overtime that can affect self-perception. At the same time, I yearn to find the beauty in simple moments of everyday life.  Musically and visually, I feel this song is an example that reflects the maturity of my artistic journey and the deeper intentionality of kelz.

Truong recently announced the full-length with the single “Just Us 2,” a track co-produced with Steph Marziano (Hayley Williams, Vundabar), which channeled New Order and Tanukichan with its combination of saturated sonics and sugared melody. The single served as a fitting introduction to an album on which kelz traverses a bittersweet journey towards self-acceptance and peace, combining the charged energy of 90s/Y2K pop with nostalgic synthscapes and whispered lyrics that sear the heart. Written over the past 4 years, the 11-track album is an introspective self-portrait about a functioning person on the surface whose internal state spins through a crisis of identity during deaths in the family, periods of depression, and reflections on simpler times.
