Cole Berliner has entered the world as a solo artist, with his first album, The Black Door, which will arrive on May 29 via Drag City.. Known for his work as one half of Sharpie Smile (formerly Kamikaze Palm Tree), his debut LP features The second single, “Bongo Syndicate,” is out today with a new music video by Brian Bartus.

As an experimentalist and a traditionalist style artist, Berliner’s sound is inspired by Bert Jansch, Jim O’Rourke, Marc Ribot and more. Cole has worked with worked with White Fence, Zsela, PAINT, Steven Brown (of Tuxedomoon), and Angel Deradoorian. Cole’s playing now takes an introspective turn with a record equal parts civilized and surreal, ornamented with lap steel guitars, violin, viola, horns, and woodwinds among the ensemble.
