Bloomsday shares two new singles, “Artichoke” and “Object Permanence.” The tracks are off their forthcoming album Heart of the Artichoke, available June 7th via Bayonet Records (Beach Fossils). “Artichoke” is an allegory for falling in love with someone and getting to know them to their core. It’s about tedious work one puts into something, peeling back layers, and really seeing someone for who they are. The video, directed by Desdemona Dallas, features the song’s lyrics layered on top of footage of artichokes being cooked, served, and eaten, adding a pastoral visual feel to an already heartwarming track.

“Object Permanence,” meanwhile, “is about taking a moment to see what you have and admiring the life you’ve built,” explains Garrison. “So much perspective can get lost in the constant push to move up and forward, that it can be hard to feel accomplished and satisfied with the present.” The track came together almost entirely during a session with Richard Orofino. Originally a song Garrison didn’t like for being too saccharine, Orofino layered ideas atop Garrison’s foundation until it became something else, serving as an example of the best part of collaboration: someone else finding the song when you can’t hear it, and leading you back to it.

Recorded across 10 days in June 2023 in upstate New York at the studio of duo Babehoven, the record was co-produced by Babehoven’s Ryan Albert, with mixing by Henry Stoehr (Slow Pulp). The record also includes inventive drumming from Andrew Stevens (Lomelda, Hovvdy), Alex Harwood, Richard Orofino, Babehoven’s Maya Bon, Hannah Pruzinsky (h.pruz, Sister.), and Chris Daley (Tomberlin).
