Bedouine Releases “One Thing Right”

Bedouine, the project of LA-based musician Azniv Korkejian, unveils “One Thing Right,” the final pre-release single/video from her new album, Neon Summer Skin, out this Friday via Thirty Tigers. Written after visiting her family in Saudi Arabia, Neon Summer Skin tells the story of family and upbringing. It’s about searching for home and building it within yourself, evident on today’s new single. “‘One Thing Right’ celebrates the concept of chosen family; the ones that help us feel at home even when we’re far from where we started,” explains Bedouine. With a full sound and the largest band performance on the album, “One Thing Right” takes inspiration from the sweet pop melodies of Todd Rundgren, Karen Carpenter, and Carole King.

In writing Neon Summer Skin, Bedouine began to recognize the lingering pain displacement can cause. Neon Summer Skin explores this evolution and eventual separation of family, whether due to political tumult or personal ambitions, as an attempt to accept that with each generation, life is a lesson in letting go.

Bedouine co-produced most of Neon Summer Skin with her longtime collaborator, Gus Seyffert. The record features piano and trumpet, both played by Azniv, harkening back to her childhood instruments, whipping flute solos, swooping string arrangements, and organ beds. The result is a fuller, more playful sound, at times grand and orchestral, shimmery and surreal, inflected with bits of psychedelia, bossa nova, and jazz.

Bedouine will celebrate the release of Neon Summer Skin in Los Angeles at Largo at the Coronet this Saturday and National Sawdust in Brooklyn on June 11th. She then will kick off a North American tour in October.

Coinciding with Neon Summer Skin’s release, Woodcat Coffee in Los Angeles has created a signature Bedouine hot chocolate featuring ingredients significant to regions of her upbringing. The drink will be accompanied by a photo exhibit of her parents in Syria and Lebanon in the ’70s. Copies of Neon Summer Skin will be for sale in Woodcat Coffee’s gift shop.
