On Friday, Brainwasher shared “At Least It Beats an Actor”, their leading single off their upcoming debut record, 39 Lightyears from Heaven, available October 24 via Mothland. The new band consists of members Matthew Duckworth Kirksey and Tommy McKenzie, who are known for their involvement in The Flaming Lips.

The music video for “At Least It Beats an Actor” was directed by Wayne Coyne (Flaming Lips) and Blake Studdard. Kirksey and McKensie describe the video as “louder and wetter than a thunderstorm, more suspenseful than the Golden Gate Bridge, scarier than an El Salvadorian prison, more influential than religion.” It complements the music itself, which takes inspiration from psychedelic rock and electropop.

Brainwasher consider 39 Lightyears from Heaven a ten-year project, working on the music in secret while on tour and writing for The Flaming Lips. The duo sought inspiration from surrealist art and the American West, citing David Lynch, Nick Cave, Portishead, and their home state of Oklahoma as direct influences.
