“Anyone Around” Jessy Lanza

Jessy Lanza has released a video for “Anyone Around.” The track is off her forthcoming release All the Time, available July 24, via Hyperdub. The collaborative video features cameos from members of Junior Boys, Savages, Caribou and Boy Harsher among many others.

The Zoom call visuals depict Jessy jamming alongside a motley cast: online tutorial personalities, fellow musicians and producers, and Jessy’s own family members. Written after her move to a new, unfamiliar city, “Anyone Around” seeks out companionship. “It’s hard for me to let go of anyone around,” she croons over a skittering beat. Like she did in NYC, Jessy again finds strange yet warm comfort from digital presences.

“I’m very grateful to be connected with everyone in this video, even if we’ve never met in person. Thank you to all of the amazing contributors who made this video possible!” Jessy says. “[After the move] I became absorbed in the world of online music production tutorials and message boards. Of course the feeling of isolation has taken on new meaning recently, as it’s become a new normal for people around the world.”

In the context of a “new normal,” “Anyone Around” serves as the perfect intro track to All the Time. Its beguiling combo of pop vocals and warm footwork sounds as fresh as it is accessible. Emotions run high but are kept measured by Jessy’s expert compositions (“Lick in Heaven”, “Alexander”), while confessions are delivered without concern (“Face”, “Badly”). To Jessy, her voice serves as the focal point of the record; not only are her lyrics much more direct, her vocals also appear at their rawest.
