“Alone” By Patrick Krief

Montreal artist Patrick Krief, has shared “Alone”, a track off his forthcoming album Skylines. Told through the eyes of a first -generation immigrant and a first-time father, Skylines is an exploration of place, purpose and belonging. Skylines is set for release on September 8th via Indica Records

“Alone” captures Patrick’s all-consuming love for his daughter, Penelope. “Initially I tried to be all cryptic about it, but eventually this song became quite clearly about my daughter Penelope, and how having this child introduced into my life allowed me to become more vulnerable, and especially in my songwriting,” details Patrick. “Namely, with this song. When she was just learning to stand, I would play guitar for her, and not much would get a reaction, but this intro riff would get her jumping and dancing immediately. She essentially A&R’d this track.”

Keeping to the familial theme, the video, shot by Evangelos Desborough, features Patrick’s niece, Lily Krief, biking around in Henderson Nevada, and by Lake Meade. “The video documents the type of isolated play and discovery we used to have as kids but is now seemingly gone,” explains Patrick.

Skylines explores Patrick’s immigrant tale. It’s a story that begins in Morocco in the 1960s, when Krief’s parents were forced to flee Casablanca in the face of abuse and discrimination. Settling in an underprivileged enclave of Montreal, they arrived at their new life only to discover the Canadian dream was fraught with its own toxic nightmares.

When this suite of songs began emerging, however, they exposed a more mature and deeply personal vein than anything Patrick had done before. As he began exploring that level of transparency, it felt only natural to make Skylines the first release under his own name.

“I wanted it to be about the person, not an idea,” he says. “I’m putting myself out there in a way I haven’t before. I’m hoping to have a more direct connection to the listener on a personal level.”

Skylines is produced by Patrick Krief with co-production by Marcus Paquin (The National, The Weather Station) and features contributions from Mishka Stein (Patrick Watson, TEKE::TEKE), Erika Angell (Thus Owls), Liam O’neill (Suuns), and Owen Pallett (Grizzly Bear, R.E.M). Patrick Krief has been making music for nearly two decades, as a member of The Dears then via his own projects including Black Diamond Bay and, most recently, Krief.
