“Aire” by Mint Field (Mecano cover) is Northern Transmissions Song of the Day.

Mint Field includes vocalist and guitarist Estrella del Sol, Sebastian Neyra on bass and Callum Brown on drums. The band are inspired by a mix of shoegaze and psych, which touch on themes of “the nostalgia and melancholy of daily life.”

The Mexico City band have returned with two cover songs, the follow-up recent album Sentimiento Mundial. At the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, everything was uncertain and the band had time on their hands. They used that time to not only make new music, but also invested in being fans of music past and present like they’d not done in a while. During that period, two songs from their childhood past were rediscovered – “Aire” by Mecano and “Un día es un día” by Jeanette.

Mint Field explains how the cover songs came about. “We have always been fans of these two 80s songs as we grew up listening to them on the radio and with our parents. We have a live version of ‘Aire’ by Mecano on cassette. We remember re-listening and feeling all the energy of that song. Ana Torroja’s voice has always seemed admirable and very unique along with the whole instrumentation of the song.

Jeanette, in the same way, has always been one of our favorite singers. We find her songwriting and the idea of romantic ballads beautiful. Both songs are very special to us and were inspired to reinvent them in our own way.”

A pop band from Spain, Mecano were formed in the early ’80s by brothers Nacho and José María Cano, who were joined by singer Ana Torroja. While the Spanish new wave, known as Movida Madrileña, was at its highest level of popularity, Mecano burst into the local scene in 1981. Jeanette is an English-born Spanish pop star who was popular throughout the 1970s and 1980s, scoring a long string of hit singles, most notably “Porque Te Vas.”

“Aire” is out now and “Un día es un día” drops on January 14th, 2022. The band are finally getting a chance to tour in support of Sentimiento Mundial with this first tour run in America since 2019.
