“Abigail” by Afternoon Bike Ride
The Montreal indie trio Afternoon Bike Ride shared their latest single “Abigail” today. The new track comes with the announcement of their upcoming third studio album, Running With Scissors, out September 19 via Friends of Friends.
Lyricist Nia Kurihara reflects on the eclectic track, “I met a little girl this summer who I think was my old friend from a previous life, her name is Abby, she told me she spoke to the ants and her friend is a tree. She held my gaze steady from the back seat while her dad drove away and my cousin (her aunt) told me she speaks with ghosts. When I was a baby, my mom had my astrology read and the person told her I was a model in Paris. As a child, I believed my parents in this life were my siblings from another life. I wonder if my dad will speak to me through my computer when he’s gone or will he be one of the trees that I always greet when entering the woods … or is this his last life, my last life? Maybe I won’t reincarnate.”
Running With Scissors is an album of grief, inspired partly by Kurihara’s experience as caretaker of her father, who lived with dementia. Her music career until recently had been framed by the importance of her father’s wellbeing; now, as he has unfortunately passed, this wh aims to continue his presence in her life while also directly confronting loss, coping, and love. Musically, the record blends ambient, folk, rock, and experimental recordings to create a fizzy, dissolving sound.
