“A New High” By Mild High Club ft: Winter
Mild High has shared his new single, “A New High (featuring Winter)” the track, is the last single, of the artist’s forthcoming release Going Going Gone, available September 17th via Stones Throw Records. Mild High Club will be playing two shows in LA and NYC around the release of the album.
“A New High” features LA-based Brazilian singer Samira Winter of the band Winter and its title alludes to the transportive and transformative power of music. Speaking about his collaboration with Winter, Alex Brettin says, “We linked up with our mutual fascination with Brazilian music and the musical and poetic quality of the Portuguese language. I had the joyful challenge of writing and fitting notes and rhythms to another language’s nuance and meter, with all the linguistic and grammatical differences from writing in English, while Samira had the challenge of working around my ideas.”
Going Going Gone is Mild High Club’s most explicitly political record to date. Its instrumental tracks are named for a ‘kluge’, i.e. a quick-and-dirty workaround — “Band-Aids on the world’s wounds”. To achieve the sound of Going Going Gone, Brettin worked with Grammy Award-winning producer Vicky ‘Farewell’ Nguyen, who also co-wrote several songs. The record was mixed by Eric Lau under lockdown in Xiamen, China, and mastered by Matt Colton in London.
Going Going Gone is the product of the touring musician’s itinerant life. It’s a record that’s worldly in more senses than one, traversing genres from jazz, electronic music, and Brazilian folk and avant-garde to AOR and psychedelic rock. The result is an ambitious, complex record that speaks directly to an accelerated, unpredictable, and confusing time.
