Vundabar debuts ‘I Need You”

Vundabar are sharing new single “I Need You”, the track is off the band’s forthcoming album Surgery and Pleasure, available March 7 via Loma Vista Recordings (Killer Mike, Militarie Gun, Show Me The Body). This spring, Vundabar will be touring North America and Europe in support of the album.
“I Need You is the centerpiece of the record,” says Vundabar’s singer/guitarist Brandon Hagen. “I think the band and I knew that the song was special. We really needed to nail the way we played it together to get the feel just right and create the slow build the song needed. We rehearsed it for months and then captured it as a live take. It felt very important to have this song on this record and in my life as it feels like a compassionate moment amongst a pretty gnarled batch of tunes. It is an homage to my dad, the interconnectedness of experience and the traverse of life and death.”
“It feels like a triumph and a perfect analogy for what I was working through and processing in my mind, body and heart while writing it. Integrating the lessons from this intense period of change, carrying them forward into my life and having that be reflected in the music.”
Vundaba, includes Brandon Hagen (guitar, vocals) and Drew McDonald (drums), and later joined by Zack Abramo (bass), Vundabar have always been imbued with a fiercely independent spirit, their sound forged in mythical underground Brooklyn venues such as Silent Barn and Shea Stadium. Musically, they exist almost as a fever dream of many genres, melding arty post-punk, tangled math-rock, sun-dappled surf-guitar, shimmering jangle-pop and grunge scuzz into sharp, compact songs that have netted them a wide fan base and a reputation for a killer live show.
Off the road and away from the studio during the pandemic years, Hagen had focused on tending to his father, going through the deeply “psychedelic” experience of parenting his own parent, teaching him to read and walk again. After his father’s death in 2023 shortly after the loss of a long-term relationship, Hagen could’ve been overwhelmed by all the loss. But instead, he found himself faced with the all-encompassing intensity of it all and chose surrender. This led him to new material that was an evolution by way of going home.
“Surgery And Pleasure is a more mature synthesis of all the stuff we’ve explored before,” he says of the album’s fusion of old-school Vundabar energy with a newfound muscularity and slickness. “In a way it feels like a return. It’s grownup Vundabar.”
