Stuffed & Ready

Cherry Glazerr

Following up on 2017’s Apocalypstick, LA’s indie favorites Cherry Glazerr are back with mixed feelings. More than just introspective, the album is a sign of change for the band, who has seena few lineup changes.

2018 saw the departure of Sasami Ashworth – pursuing her own solo career as SASAMI – whose eccentric work behind the keys helped characterize the band’s almost indefinite style – ‘almost’ being the key word here. While time has whittled the band to final original member Clementine Creevy, the frontwoman has kept the first images of solid rock intact.

Stuffed & Ready kicks off strong with echoing and polished fuzz of “Ohio”. Tinged with the alt-punk stylings of northeastern indie charm, we are kicked right into gear for what feels like a triumphant return of a band that never actually left us. Our impatience is graciously being rewarded.

The nostalgic fuzz of “Wasted Nun” vies for dominance on this record, only three tracks to make its mark as early as possible. Clementine shouts through the ether as she works out subtle conflict that follows the band’s earlier single, “Daddi”. While it may have grabbed the attention of eager fans awaiting the new stuff, it found itself appropriately and comfortably within the first half of the record.

“That’s Not My Real Life” follows with a certain motivation to push forward. Just shy of halfway, it jams like a break in traffic and keeps spirits high despite ghostly dark lines shouted from the driver’s seat. Stuffed & Ready is out now on Secretly Canadian and the band are touring hard until summer. Don’t miss this one, folks. It’s a cool 9/10.
